IMPAC3T-IP

Scenario

Classical Plus

Traditional technology licensing focuses on high-value patents, primarily from STEM research, and prioritises economic returns.

However, this approach often overlooks research outputs with significant societal benefits, particularly in fields like Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS).

Classical Plus is a new approach to licensing that expands beyond patents to include copyrights, know-how, digital libraries, datasets, and other assets. It shifts the focus from purely financial gain to broader societal and environmental impact.

Key features of Classical Plus licensing:

Beyond STEM
Includes AHSS research and diverse intellectual assets.
New Licensing Models
Embraces Creative Commons, Freemium, and automated licensing to support low-value, high-impact assets.
Scalable & Sustainable
Uses automation to simplify licensing, making widespread adoption feasible.

The IMPAC3T-IP Classical Plus Toolbox

As part of its broader Toolbox, IMPAC3T-IP is developing dedicated resources to help licensing professionals and stakeholders leverage the shifting licensing landscape.

By modernising licensing approaches, Classical Plus ensures that valuable research, regardless of its economic value, can create meaningful impact across society.

The toolbox will:

Raise awareness of alternative licensing models that maximise research impact.
Provide case studies showcasing diverse assets and their real-world applications.
Equip researchers with tools to license their work effectively, including guidance on Creative Commons and automated processes.
Help Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) and licensing professionals execute more licensing deals efficiently, even for lower-value assets.
Support sustainable business models by exploring funding from policymakers, education bodies, and other stakeholders.
